Surviving The Summer Holidays
The term “the holidays” usually refers to Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day–notoriously difficult times to stay healthy! The “summer holidays” aren’t that much easier - what with the strawberry shortcake, ice cream and apple pie. Here are some tips to help survive this first holiday weekend of Summer 2008!
1. Schedule fitness time right into your plans instead of waiting for it to happen or just hoping you’ll get to it. Get your kids involved as well - family bike rides, pick out a new trail to hike, or if you’re lucky and the weather is going to be warm hit the beach or pool!
2. Plan what you’ll eat at those family picnics. I don’t mean bring along your own weighed and measured portions–I mean get a plate, sit down and eat. You’ll likely eat a lot less by serving up a plate than by grazing for a few hours at the food table. When the food is on a plate in front of you it is much easier to control your portions and not over eat.
3. Have your kids check in before they eat. It is so easy for older, more independent kids to help themselves (quite happily) to 14 servings of ice cream and six cans of pop. Make sure they understand before you head out what’s expected of them. Certainly don’t deny them their favorite desserts - remember a healthy lifestyle can accommodate just about anything in moderation!
4. Don’t let yourself feel too guilty if you go overboard and skip a day of exercise. A healthy lifestyle is created by an accumulation of choices. As long as you say “yes” to good health habits more than you say “no” — you’re on your way.
