Remember When
Yesterday, I spent the day at my son’s preschool. The last day of school for the year was being celebrated by “The Preschool Olympics”! The kids were so excited–they couldn’t wait to test their skill on the crab walk, race thru the obstacle course and spin out on the big wheel race. Their enthusiasm for sheer movement is always overwhelming–but this was truly exercise and they were still EXCITED. When and where does it happen that we go from freedom loving, movement seeking, wiggly bodies craving nothing more than an open yard to run to sedentary couch potatoes whose only true exercise is a remote bicep curl? Well, it’s true that racing your big wheel against your best buddy is more fun than doing it alone and crab walking with your mommy is pretty fun, too–I’m willing to bet that every “Olympic” activity is more fun than the dry activities we adults call exercise (treadmill, anyone?). Here’s the challenge. Try and find your inner “Preschool Olympian”! Find some activities that excite you, find something to do that you can’t wait to try. Sign up for your gyms kettle ball class, take karate, join a basketball league or train for a triathlon. Make exercise fun again! Enjoy.
